Not long after my mother's funeral service, my younger brother & sister, to get away from everything (to get over mum's death) took a vacation in Canada.
On their return, they brought over some gifts which I still have today. One of them takes pride of place in our lounge. It is a wall clock with 13 shields & a photo of Niagra Falls as the centrepiece. The shields start at the top with the Canadian Flag & the 12 as follows:-

Quebec
New Brunswick
Nova Scotia
P.E.I
Newfoundland
N.W.T (Which I take stands for North West Territories)?
Yukon
British Columbia
Alberta
Saskatchewan
Manitoba
Ontario

What does P.E.I mean?

BTW they are not called states. There are 10 provinces and 3 territiries. NWT was broken up into NWT and Nunavit.

YUP! Definitely cross check their info. Wikipedia (for those that don't know) is user generated and checked but does contain the odd mistake.

I'd love to see a pic of the clock when you have the time to take it Sirius!

No problem. Just waiting to pick up a new digital camera sometime this month. Current one too expensive to have screen repaired.

That IS quite nice, Sirius! Thanks for posting it!

I'll leave it here for now but will add it to our "Canadiana" section eventually. Thanks again.

You're welcome. The annoying thing about it is that it was 11 years ago this summer. He took some brilliant videos of their tour of Canada, especially Toronto. And, I'm still waiting for a copy!!!

This Yankee knows they're provinces and territories :p And I know the capitals: Victoria BC, Edmonton AB, Regina SK, Winnipeg MB, Toronto ON, Quebec (City) PQ (I am old school), Frederickton NB, St. John's NL, Charlottetown PE, Halifax NS, Whitehorse YT, Yellowknife NT, Iqaluit, NU. Ottawa is the national capital.

Are the territories allowed to petition for provincial status? Ours can. Puerto Rico keeps trying, but they never get it.

Every province has a premier, which is rather a bit queer, since a premier is a prime minister almost anywhere else. And they have lieutenant governors, who attend ribbon-cutting ceremonies and sign bills when ordered to do so. And prorogue the provincial parliaments, I think. I would love to see one of them veto a bill. Over-under on how long they would keep their job thereafter: 68 minutes. I'll take the under :)

The national government has a prime minister (not a premier) and a governor-general, who does basically what a lieutenant governor does. Right now, it's a lady named Michaelle Jean, from Quebec, who was Bloc Quebecois and, in an interview, called herself a Quebecois first. Hmmm. I'd love to see our President (I'm from the States, but I have thrown my lot in with Canada) say something like that. He'd be called... a separatist (lol). Whatever... a GG is a good symbol to have for the unity of the country, which we don't have down here.

Just discovered these forums. As a lover of Canadiana (the good, the bad, and especially the tacky) I think I'll hang out here a lot!

SiriusB, the clock is amazing. The photo of the Falls is the US side! That is Goat Island (in New York state) in the upper middle, and you can just see a bit of the mist off the Canadian falls in the upper right hand corner. Check it out on Google Earth, and you'll clearly see the uneven edge to the falls on the US side, versus a more or less smooth curve to the Canadian edge.

Cesium133, the Premier of the Province of Quebec likes to call him (or her) self The Prime Minister of the Nation of Quebec. This appeals to a big chunk of Quebec voters, and is perfectly legal. The rest of Canada likes to call him the Premier of the Province of Quebec, in the hopes that this will piss him (or her) off. This too is perfectly legal. And that's your first lesson in Canadian politics  .
