I'm sure these thoughts have been explored by the brainiacs previously but I'm willing to risk that.

If one reads the history of science then you find that it espouses the big bang theory.
So I'm thinking, If thats true and everything started at once, then its reasonable to suggest that life started at about the same time also. Now lets stir the pot and get thickerer.
If life evolves at the same rate and if inteligence evolves at the same rate then its reasonable that the ability to communicate via electromagnetic waves likely would come about the same time. Hey thats great. So if life # 1 sends a signal at the same time that life #2 tries to detect it, then there's a problem involving time and distance. Especialy if life #1 and #2 are several hundred light years apart. Well damn.

Just for giggles, here's another thought.

Its the old speed of light theory. Mr. Einstien indicates that the speed of light is constant. Well thats handy. He often thought about the speed of light by riding the photons. Well ok, I confess. I do too. So there i am sitting in my photon flight chair with my handy flash light in hand booting along at what ever speed the photon will take me at. I'm a wuss and i'm concerned about all that dust getting in my face so i am in a cosy little cabin. I have maps on the walls. No sense getting lost at light speed. So i turn on my light. And for all intents and purposes its directly forward in the same direction as the photon i'm traveling on is going. Hey, how about that, i can see my map and everything else in my little cabin.
Ok here we go. I'm sure theres lots of arguments about this. But i'm gonna lay it down and let some highly inteligent life try to shoot it down.

First. I'm going to say that its possible for something to go faster than the speed of light. Go ahead. Disprove it.

I'm also going to go out on a limb and say that the speed of the light from the flash light is the combined speed of the photon I'm traveling on and the speed of the light emitting from the flashlight. I'll make it thickerer. Mr. alien standing on a moon having a cup of what ever aliens drink, see's me go by and the light in my cabin come on. These aliens are quick.

I guess its all about relative to what ?

It makes my head squirm but everyone is welcome to explore it.

Atom-Ant.

Welcome to the forum Atom-Ant!

I must say working as an electrical engineer in the RF field, all my work depends on the speed of light in a vacuum being constant and so far that has stood up pretty well. If it ever does change I'll let you know.

Yay grizzz.

yup. seems the fastest speed a photon can go is the speed of light which has been dubbed a constant.

Well my vehicle will only go so fast too. But if i crawl out of my roof vent and jump on my motorcycle in the back, I can accelerate in any given direction at the speed of the bike and the speed of the vehicle if the bike is going in the same direction. My theory holds true so far. cuz both photons move at the speed of light. Photon 1 is speed of light x 1 and photon two which was launched from photon 1 is now doing the speed of light x2.

If i have a fancy beam splitter and i shine a light up the middle and the beams are sent out at 180 degrees apart, we now have two photons moving away from each other at the speed of light X2. Cheap and dirty but it works for me
