Hey everyone, I just joined the team earlier today (Dec 8th)

I am located in Nanaimo (on Vancouver Island, a 30ish km boat ride from Vancouver), BC
I have been a member of SETI@Home since Oct 10, 2000
Shortly after BOINC was started and SETI@Home classic was retired I left the project, but I'm back again!

As far as my systems, I currently have:

Linux 64 bit Ubuntu:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+
2 GB RAM

Linux 32 bit Ubuntu:

AMD Athlon XP 3000+
1 GB RAM
(running a bit slow, I cant pinpoint why.. as this computer is only used as a jukebox/video player, when I get free time I may try a more compact Linux distro, or a different window manager or see what I can do to speed it up.. )

Windows XP 32bit:

AMD Sempron Processor 3000+
1 GB RAM
(similar specs to the Linux 32 bit box above, yet is running considerably faster... on WinXP? that doesnt make sense to me)

I am currently only computing for SETI@Home in BOINC, with a total of a mere 3500ish credits, but I'm running full steam now so that number will soon start rising, and now I'm in it for the long haul. The only thing that will stop me now is contact with ET, because once that happens the project may seem like a bit of a waste of time :-P

(edit: was originally a "this is my signature I just added" post, changed to a reply)

Thanks for the welcoming, seeing as you're the "Puppy pusher" you didtn seem to push it very hard, lol.. I'm fairly new to Linux (3 months), though on my main computer and jukebox I have "burned my bridges" and not looked back, with no Microsoft products installed whatsoever.. the 3rd box with Windows is for family members who are frightened by change.. It was either get rid of Windows or get rid of the family members, but in the end they won, though not by much :-P

I have heard of Puppy Linux in the past.. As my Athlon 3000 single core is running Ubuntu 8.10 and is only used for music/video, Puppy Linux should surely make it faster than the Windows box, wouldnt you think? It has better hardware, I dont see why it isnt running faster than the XP box even now running Ubuntu..

If you've run Ubuntu in the past have you noticed a significant performance increase on Puppy Linux? Or with a gig of ram like I have would it be that noticeable? Even a "maybe, maybe not" reply would still make me seriously consider the change :-P

OK STREEN
YOU ASKED FOR IT !
ON MY AMD 1.667 WITH 1 G RAM PUPPY BOOTS UP IN 37 SECONDS. FULL INSTALL.
I FIND EVERYTHING ABOUT PUPPY TO BE BLAZING FAST. IT DOES EVERYTHING RIGHT AWAY WITH NO UPDATING.
IT IS ALSO VERY SECURE. I HAVE BEEN USING IT FOR 2 YEARS BEHIND A ROUTER WITH NO FIREWALL OR ANTIVIRUS PROGRAMS. I'VE NEVER BEEN HACKED, TROJANED, VIRUSED OR ATTACKED.
IT HANDLES MULTI CORE CPU'S (DUALS, QUADS), SATA DRIVES, ALL THE FLASH MEM CARDS AND USB
90 MB .ISO DOWNLOAD. RUNS AS A LIVE CD SO NOTHING WRITTEN ONTO YOUR HD UNLESS YOU WANT IT TO.
A FULL INSTALL IS BEST AND TAKES ABOUT 10 MINUTES TILL ONLINE.
A FULL SUITE OF NET, OFFICE, MULTIMEDIA,
YOU MENTIONED A AUDIO/VIDEO BOX. ABOUT THE ONLY THING I HAVE HAD ANY TROUBLE WITH IS MY NVIDIA CARD.
IT HAS A TV OUTPUT THAT I HAVE NEVER GOTTEN TO WORK IN PUPPY.
SO I HAVE 2 HD'S. MAIN ONE WITH PUPPY AND THE SLAVE WITH XP FOR WATCHING VIDS ON TV. PUPPY HAS A "GRUB" BOOT MANAGER THAT ALLOWS A CHOICE OF PUPPY OR WIN XP AT STARTUP.
http://unclezapaudiozap.phpbb3now.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5&start=20
SHOWS GREAT INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLING PUPPY. TAKE A LOOK THERE FIRST.
OF COURSE I AM ALWAYS MORE THAN WILLING TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS.
I'M IN HERE MORNING NOON AND EVENINGS.
HOLLAR IF I CAN HELP.

Haha, well its slightly hard to see the speed when its running off a Live CD right? :-P
I'm downloading and will just run the CD to see what it comes packaged with and then I will install it to a new partition and throw BOINC on it to test the speed.

I should have been more specific, I have an nVidia card but just run videos on the computer monitor, so this is not a problem whatsoever. Ive never used its video out in all of the 4ish years that I've had the card.

Welcome to the team Streen! Looks like you've got a few good crunchers there. I noticed you're crunching primarily space based projects, so if you're looking to expand your projects from SETI and Einstein there are several other projects you can check out as well, most noteably Milkyway@Home and Cosmology@Home.

http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/create_account_form.php?teamid=12
http://www.cosmologyathome.org/create_account_form.php?teamid=16

There's also SETI's beta project:

http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/beta/create_account_form.php?teamid=167

A full (?) list of projects that we currently have a team for can be found here:

http://teamcanada.freeforums.org/canada-quick-sign-up-links-for-boinc-projects-t98.html

Not all the projects are still active or giving out work, but it'll give you a quick area to check for projects that may interest you.

Have fun and hope to see you around the forum!
