Sorry, I’m not Canadian. I was born in Beirut Lebanon,
but I do not feel Lebanese. I feel more Greek than anything,
but I don’t live in Greece, I live in Saudi Arabia! Ok, now I’m dizzy…phew :?

So, just wanted to say hi. Happy to be a member of this team.
I just have a question please.
If one of us finds ET life from another planet, do we all become
famous since we are part of a team?
I would like all of you guys to be famous if it was me. Just wanted to ask.

Ok, take care. BTW email me anytime for anything, no guarantees that I’ll reply though. Lol

Welcome Patrick!!

Well if any of us find the WOW signal It would be SETI that would first know and I'm sure they would want the Cruncher who found it to be part of the Media Circus! Make sure when you are speaking to the press to let them know to stop by here! lol

Hi Patrick and welcome. Hmmm ... that sounds a bit confusing what you said LOL ! But you sound friendly and that's good enough for me :) I'm not actually a member of this great team, I infiltrated and now infest it haha ;)

I think Pawly is right - if your computer is the one that makes the big discovery, media circus for sure LOL.

Same goes here, email anytime, and with me, you will always get a reply ... eventually LOL. I get so much email and spam in so many different email accounts, I kind of lose track sometimes LOL. PS Pawly, I finally found that PM u sent me a while back, it somehow ended up in my Trash, thanks for resending (embarrassed ratty). So if you send an email and get no response, just send another saying "smarten up, dummy rat!" LOL.

I'm sorry to do this guys, typically I like to find my own answers but I'm having a bit of a hard time.

Every time I run boinc, I end up opening up the shell, doing the "BROWSER=/usr/bin/firefix" input, then try for about half an hour to get the program running before I give up and start beating up some unsuspecting bit of furniture or whatever else might make itself kown to me at that moment.

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I run firefox on linux, and am VERY eager to participate in this program. I WILL beg shamelessly if needed :)

Hi TheLiefie1, sorry to hear you've been having that ongoing problem. Gee, my Browser is Firefox, but my OS is XP, so not sure if I can help, but to start Boinc all I do is double click the desktop shortcut and Boinc starts up and then it contacts seti@home. Only problem I've been having lately is in downloading new Work Units, probably due to the new server's "growing pains" lol. Maybe there is someone here also running Linux. I don't understand why u have to open the shell and do "the "BROWSER=/usr/bin/firefix" input. My hunch is it shouldn't have to be that complicated. Sorry I'm not more help, good luck with that :)

I'm not sure if there is anyone on my team running Linux. I will ask around and find out. Maybe we have someone that can help.

I'll give it a shot.

Perhaps that's the trouble, if my timing sucks I might be trying to start the run_manager when the servers are offline.
It's been another allnighter bangin' the kb, I'll try to run it again when I manage to drag my sorry butt outta bed.

I'm delighted to be onboard, and look forward to a whole new education over the next few weeks.

Welcome, TheLiefie1 !

Linux, eh? HHHmmmm? Well the browser shouldn't make a difference I don't think, as BOINC is a stand alone program. Unfortunately, I don't run Linux, but I will look to see what I can find out for you.

After asking around a bit, people have suggested that you ask your question on the seti@home message boards. Maybe try cafe@seti or science or number crunching - some of the people there probably run Linux for sure as I remember one guy discussing Ubuntuu and can probably help you out:

I took the liberty of posting his question in the Numbers Crunching Forum on Seti.....here is the answer I got for him...

Quote:
BROWSER=/usr/bin/firefox
export BROWSER
cd "/BOINC"
./boincmgr &

this assumes that boinc is installed in "/BOINC".
You then can start the manager with ./Run_Manager.sh

The script is something that the poster wrote so that he could easily run BOINC on a Linux system.

Nah, no failure present. Bless the ever present learning curve, there are times when I feel like I know nothing at all.
When I wanna feel like a linux guru, I hang out with my rabbits :P

Thanks SplatRat. You are actually one of the first to figure out the "ajinbc" thing without to much help ( notwithstanding the "location: British Columbia" thing )

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Hi Everyone, I was surprised to get an email from Pawly since I haven’t been with seti for many many years. I joined seti when they first came out but after my PC crashed I couldn’t get to the download page to re-install the program. After trying for a few months I gave up.

Anyway, I was glad to see I didn’t lose my credits but sad to see that seti still hasn’t improved much in that they are still having problems with their program and supplying us with work.

As far as I can understand we can also get work from other places to now, so I will be checking them out when I have the time. There are so many it’s going to be hard to choose.

Well I'm on my way to see if they have my name up yet on the team page at seti. See ya later! :-D

Hey guys,

I was doing a research project on Malaria and came across MalariaControl.net Unfortunately, they arent' accepting new members for that  (someone let me know if they are!!) But I've dug around a bit more and found out that the modeling that Rosetta@home does also partially go towards Malaria research (in particular on mosquito genes), so I've signed up instead.

Hope to talk to you guys more in the future!

Welcome enderwiggin430!

Yup, I'm afraid malariacontrol is closed to new accounts for the time being. Your question is a timely one so I started a thread with it in the malariacontrol Team Section. If you have any links or anything that you think would go well in that thread or section, please post them!

Rosetta is a good choice for a beginner cruncher, as it has a lot of members and support is easily obtained.
(lots of crunchers = lots of posters on Q&A and Number Crunching Forums).

Welcome aboard,
Pawly
