HEY HEY
NOT MUCH COMMAND LINE IN PUPPY REALLY. CHECK OUT MY REFERENCES TO TRYING A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT LINUX DISTROS.
IN THERE YOU WILL FIND MY OPINIONS OF UBUNTU AS WELL AS A BUNCH OF OTHERS. AND I STILL LIKE PUPPY BEST.
ALL IT COSTS YOU IS A BLANK CD AND A BIT OF TIME. THE CD WORKS AS A " LIVE CD " WITH INSTALLATION OPTIONS SO IT DOESN'T AFFECT YOUR MACHINE IN ANY WAY UNLESS YOU WANT TO INSTALL IT. JUST A NOTE: ON THE UBUNTU WEBSITE FORUM PUPPY IS REFERRED TO AS " AMAZING " BY UBUNTU USERS.

I've got puppy DLed Zapp. I'll be throwing it on my step-dad's old machine after I upgrade him to a new one in about a week. It's a bit of an older one, with less than 256 mb of RAM. Been meaning to resurect a linux machine for a while, and if puppy runs on older machines half as well as it sounds, than it just might make his machine useful again.

Fenrir: Don't rush on vista. You aren't really missing anything. XP is a far sturdier system (now) than Vista in its current incarnation. They fixed a lot of the bugs, but its not really a good distribution yet. Wait until after SP1 has been chewed up a little bit and we see what new bugs we'll have to deal with.

Had Vista (to give it a try) a while ago and was not impressed with it in the state it was in, did like the look of it but did not like how it ran, too much crap going on in that OS for this PC to take. My brother in law has home basic on his (x86) and it's brutal lol but he doesn't do much with his PC so it's good enough for him. For me I can be quite demanding on resources at time (gaming, photo editing and such) Vista had a problem with me

My next machine which I am gonna build (Never buying a pre-made again, knew it was a bad idea from the get go haha) will most likely have it but will also have the horse power to put up with me and Vista (Drooling over Phemon) Hopefully by then Vista will have some of the garbage worked out of it, or at least a good slipstream program I can use to do it myself. Vlite is good but still to early in development.

I just got this system a couple months ago. It is an Acer M5629 with Core2 Quad CPU running at 2.4 GHz. It was on special and included a 22" monitor and 3Gb of memory running Vista Home Premium. I upgraded the 22" monitor to 24" for an additional $150 and everything was still under $1000. Once I get a video card capable of two monitors, I will be able to use both the new 24" LCD and my old 20" LCD. The Internet and TV simultaneously - I may only come out of the den for food.

With the exception of one minor annoyance, I am very pleased with both the system and Vista. Vista is very slick and seems stable. I have had no crashes and most everything I wanted to move from my XP system did so without problem. I abandoned the old Office 97 I had and installed the complete Open Office Suite under Vista. I had not been running SETI on my XP system because it ran too hot. This new system will also run hot if I allow all four processors to run STI at full clock speed and 100%. Fortunately, the system allows the CPUs to be throttled back and I run them at 88% of max clock speed. That allows all four to run SETI at 100% and still stay cool. They produce a RAC close to 1700 per day with the standard BOINC system.

I have plans to add a good video card - at the moment, there is nothing except the on-board Intel video which eats a fair chunk of memory. I'm looking to get one of the nVidia 8800 cards but haven't decided which. I also plan on adding a TV tuner card and a NAS drive capable of streaming video so I make the system the centre of a home theatre system. I was going to add memory -the system is capable of 8 Gb - but I am going to try a new feature of Vista called "ReadyBoost" first. I have tried it and it works OK but the card I have was small (512 Mb) and not particularly fast. I plan on a 4 Gb card capable of 20 Mb/s that I need for my camera anyway. No particular rush so I am looking to pick up a deal. ReadtBoost allows any (fast) memory stick (like SD, Memory Stick, Thumb Drives, etc) to be plugged into a card slot and assigned as system memory.

I would not likely have rushed out to upgrade my old system from XP to Vista since it was working OK but much of the technology in it was old and could not have been easily updated. Any reasonable update would have required gutting just about everything except the case. The Acer system happened to come along at just the right time so the move to Vista seemed reasonable on it. So far, I have no complaints. Vista is every bit as stable as XP and offers a number of very nice features like ReadyBoost.

It's pretty cool for picture searching, but I find it quite annoying when searching through regular websites.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 Linux 64 bit on my main box, then Ubuntu 8.10 32 bit for my second (jukebox that just plays music and videos), and Windows XP on the third (family computer for those who hate change). All have direct access to the internet.

I'm always open to suggestions as to new Linux distros to install on my jukebox, or maybe even BSD or something.. My only requirements are that it is fairly easy to set up, though doesnt have to be totally noob friendly, and that it plays music/videos and BOINC as fast as possible. Right now my jukebox is crunching BOINC slower than the WinXP box, which makes no sense to me. (The XP box is in every possible way a weaker machine, slower ram, slower cpu, slower everything)

SORRY YA ALL, BUT I GOTTA DO IT.
THE PUPPY PUSHER STRIKES AGAIN.

STREEN
MY RANK OF PUPPY PUSHER COMES FROM MY LOVE FOR PUPPY LINUX.
PUPPY DINGO 4.00 IS AMAZING. YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO IT ALL OVER THE "PLATFORMS" SECTION. OR
http://puppylinux.ca/puppyfiles1/puppy-4.00-k2.6.21.7-seamonkey.iso
I'VE BEEN USING PUPPY FOR 2 YEARS ON MY MAIN BOX.
THATS AFTER TRYING OUT ABOUT 40 DISTROS INCLUDING UBUNTU.
ALL IT WILL COST YOU IS A BLANK CD.
