Hey Guys,
Just thought I'd share some pics of my basement server. I've set it up to be a in cupboard in the basement furnace room. A great set up for me because it allows me to wire it up to the office and keep it out of sight. It's a linux server that hosts my website, ftp, file server, and print server.
Cheers

Hmmm, I'm not sure how to fix it, I just used the 'add image to post' link in supplied in the forum posting box.

There were some missing code numbers. I added them in. Not sure why they went missing but all is good! :yup:

Yeah, I jig-sawed a good portion of the top of the cupboard off to allow for airflow, it's all well above eye level, so I never notice. I just SSH/VNC in whenever I need to configure/fix something on it. It's nice for my wife and I to share documents across the home network and always be able access them from work or family's homes (as I'm always needing some little utility while fixing up all the family's computer issues). Plus the automated backup of our docs.. something I would otherwise neglect to do.

Interesting. I assume being a server it's not a big heat generator anyway. You could also cut out some of the bottom if you need to. You could even put air filters over the holes - http://www.afrotechmods.com/reallycheap ... shener.htm

That's a good idea, I should do that. I don't have any air filter on it right now, but that probably would save me some cleaning down the line. It doesn't actually get too hot in there at all. I had previously thought of taking a case fan and mounting it right into the cupboard wall to bring air in, but it turned out to be unnecessary.

Here's the rest of my 'crunching room' set up.
Computer on the right hand side with the switch & router in the baskets and a laptop on the pull out tray.

Thanks, yeah I had the luxury of planning the set up ahead of of time. The room it's in now was previously cover in 5 layers of grandma style wallpaper dating back 50+ years. So part of the renovation of that room was running of cables covertly and new furniture to clean up the space so everything would have it's own place. I even managed to convince my wife of the need for a new case for the computer so it would match. hehe.

Very nice setup, maybe one day I'll get organized and have a clean area like that as well.

Oh, I forgot stats.
The server in the basement is a simple p3 1ghz with 756MB RAM, 4 HD's, running Fedora. The desktop is a P4 3ghz with 2gigs of Ram and 750Gigs of HD, running WinXP. The laptop is a simple Pentium M, with 512 ram and a 40gig HD. I used to have a bunch more old clunkers, left overs.. but I was convinced to do some winter cleaning and they all met their maker at the computer recyclers. I hope to upgrade to the core2 architecture sooner than later, but alas I can't justify it just yet.

At least you know where things are - mine's cluttered and I don't have a clue! My kids use my desk as a storage area for all of their crap and end up burying my "organized mess" in the process. :grumpy:

I'll take the blame for the numerous beer bottles though... ....at least I hope they're all mine....

I'm a fairly organized person, but my wife is even more organized.. and she's pregnant now so her nesting instinct has kicked in, which increases the organization gene by 10X.. she just found her new favourite store yesterday, 'get organized' or something like that. Needless to say the only places in the house that are a mess are my dresser drawers, my tool boxes, and my shed.

Thanks! the baby boincer, heh, is due Aug. 10th. We're pretty excited about it. Then there will be lots more CPU cycles available for crunchin, as I'll be wiped out tired and not using the computer much.

@ PAWLY
START THEM EARLY IS RIGHT.
A BUDDY'S DAUGHTER STARTED PLAYING WITH MY OLD COCO 3 WHEN SHE WAS STILL IN DIAPERS. SHE IS NOW IN HER MID TWENTIES AND AN I.T. TECH. AND SHE BLAMES ME FOR HER INTEREST.

Congrats on the new comer. Shoping is not bad. Wait when she ask for ice creem in minus 30 weather :)
Now are you going to loose your crunching room to make space for the baby?
