Hi people!

I'm looking for some movies to rent for my girlfriend and I to watch and enjoy.

I get always the same problem: I can't think of any movies I'd like to watch.

That's why I'm asking you to help me out by telling me what you liked the most in the cinema category.

Myself, I usually prefer thriller / dark movies, but not the common horror blockbuster. I am open to any movies, as long as it's good. Here's some movies I liked for the storyline or other reasons: Back to the Future trilogy, Equilibrium, Batman Begins / The Dark Knight combo, The Departed, The Godfather trilogy (although the 3rd one kind of s*cks), The Sixth Sense, The X-men Trilogy (found it entertaining), The Prestige, Memento, the Jurassic Park trilogy... and much more. I'd say my favorites movies are like The Prestige and Memento: I love when I have to watch the movie a second time later to really get all of it. I think you guessed I'm one of the Nolan brothers' fans ;-)

As you can see, I've got eclectic tastes. In fact, I think each movie as the potential to be liked as long as you get into it. That's the way I see it, so don't hesitate to talk about any kind of movie you liked so I make a nice list of future home cinema sessions. Thanks for your contribution ;-)

'Green Mile' with Tom Hanks and Michael Clark Duncan is an excellent addition. I'm partial to most of Will Smith's movies- he's a fun talent to watch. One film that is a good 'couples film' - IMO - is 'Romancing the Stone'- there's action, adventure, and romance. The sequal 'Jewel of the Nile' is not as good.

Compared to the old classics, I find that modern movies have to be good for me to watch them. Looking forward to getting 2012 & Sherlock Holmes on dvd.

One of my favourites is "The Day the Earth Caught Fire". fairly dramatic for its time.

I took note of your suggestions! Seems really interesting to me.

I recently watched Fight Club. Some violence involved, yeah, but a good thinking behind the story. I liked the way its done. Based-on-novel movies sometimes have a better plot.

Just for fun you could try one of my older favorites - American Graffiti (original 1973).
Producer: Francis Ford Coppola
Director: George Lucas

With some early movie performances by:

Ron Howard
Richard Dreyfuss
Harrison Ford
Cindy Williams
Mackenzie Phillips
Wolfman Jack
Suzanne Somers

If you like classic cars and music, this is worth the rental.

Fight Club and Memento are some of my all time favourite movies. Some other favourites off the top of my head:

12 Monkeys
Matrix trilogy
Lord of the Rings trilogy
Star Wars
Saving Private Ryan
Hero
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
The Crow (kind of corny, but that's ok)
Run Lola Run (German) - cool movie/lots of fun!
Blade Runner
Pulp Fiction
Taxi Driver
Schindler's List
The Piano
The Red Violin
The Usual Suspects
Trainspotting
Platoon
Snatch
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Serenity/Firefly (TV Servies) - corny as hell, but somewhat fun; watch the TV series first
Leon (The Professional) - French (English remake just doesn't cut it)
Pan's Labyrinth - (violent!)

There's many more, but can't remember them all!

Dune

The original 'director's cut' version. It's longer than the theatrical version- but the additional content does add to the mythos.
The first noticable difference is in the opening with the voice over being male and greater detail is given to the history of the empire.

I always make the mistake of starting Dune late and night and inevitably fall asleep before the end. Somehow through the 5 times I've watched it I think I've pieced out the entire movie now. One day I'll watch it during the day just to make sure...

Which version of Dune are you talking about? - the 1984 version with Sting in it or the 2000 version with William Hurt?
Both have their strengths and weaknesses although I do prefer the later one - handles the story line better.

Fans of the Dune series are polarized by the movie, although the film has become a cult favorite, and at least three different versions have been released worldwide. In some cuts of the film Lynch's name is replaced in the credits with the name of a fictional director Alan Smithee, a pseudonym used by directors who wish not to be associated with a film for which they would normally be credited.

I love the sci fi stuff, Avatar, terminator, star wars ect. My favorite show so far has been Shawshank Redemption, it's way out of my typical movie I watch, but the acting, and characters are excellent.
