Hello everyone!

I've just started running boinc. I figure, I'm too lazy to be turning the computer off when I'm not using it, it might as well do somebody some good. Bit of a heat wave here, and I've no A/C so until things cool off, I'm only giving away 10% CPU time.

For the time being, I'm just going to contribute to the one project (malariacontrol.net)

Rick

Hi Rick! I'm in Etobicoke, so I know all about the heatwave there (here) not many Km's between us. I've been running boinc for about 5 years, I run many different projects as do most other "Crunchers". I have an air conditioner so I run my machines(2)at 100% all year. If you have a video card in your machine there are a few projects that you can use it on, depending on what kind it is, (nVidia or ATI) using your video card is much faster than using the CPU in your machine, lots more credits than CPU. I use my video card at Collatz Conjecture and at Milkyway. I use my CPU's at Aqua and many others. So here's hoping the temps go down a little and allow you to turn on the power of your machine so you can get into the fun of trying to get as many useless credits as you can. All we can use credits for is "bragging rights" so have fun! :-D

Hi Bruce!

I don't have a real server, just off the shelf, a quad Phenom. I wasn't thinking boinc when I bought, so now I'm seriously thinking of a new case & 120 mm fans, though that won't do anything about ambiant. I'm just doing malariacontrol.net at the moment, and they make no use whatsoever of the GPU, either. If I did think of using GPU, it would have to be a cuda project, Nividia is well supported under Linux, while ATI is nothing but headaches.Image

Hi Rick!
I dont a have a server either, but I do have an i7-920 CPU and an nVidia 275 GTX video card. I got mine from TigerDirect, its a custom build with an X58 SLI LE Motherboard from EVGA. I only had about 250,000 credits in August of /09, I bought the i7 on Sept. 2nd /09 and now I have over 21 million credits! Good machine for crunching and gaming! :-D

Thanks WereChild! I put that line in my sig. As for the heat, a new case is in order. I think I really want to do this, so put a bit more cash out there for the case I should have bought first off. ditch the 90mm fans, grab a case, probably Coolmaster, that includes 120mm fans already. I think my P/S is fine, and I'm not looking to spend too much at the moment, so the best bang for my buck would be better case with better ventilation, better air flow.
