MS has listened to WHS users & have been working on WHS V2 (based on Server2008R2). No more 32bit problems s it's 64bit only. From the previews already seen, it looks like some very good improvements over V1.

Have downloaded the beta & will set up shortly. This build is gonna tested tested very thoroughly BEFORE i migate over to V2...don't wanna lose all that data, time & effort spent on V1.....

Rather than continue with the WHS Console, MS has changed it a Dashboard & the front page has been made more customisable.

Being short of drives, going to pull the hd on my Win 7 ultimate 64 rig & use that for testing & use one of the 1tb drives in whsv1 which, surprisingly, is empty of data atm....

On hold for now, thank u MS... :(

test rig set up & WHS2 installed nicely. set up user account, np. looking good with server 2008R2 behind it.

Now to set up Remote access - BIG RED roadblock - dialogue box states...router blocked (& under details shows router ip as ISP's address, when it should be the router address).

hmmn, wonder if it's conflicting with WHS 1? Shutdown WHS, reboot WHS2. Network can be seen, net access ok. retry Remote access, over 20 attempts later, still same problem.

Shutdown WHS2, restart WHS 1, all ok, no problems.

While remote access problem experienced with WHS2, tried rdp into all rigs on lan. no problems experienced...weird.

Back to the drawing board... :(

We finally get there.... :P

Beta 1 was U.S only...nice 1 MS

Have just finished installing Beta Refreshed on a test rig & I must admit, it does look a great improvement over WHS v1.

As it's only a beta, I will not be putting any valuable data on it until it becomes an RTM version.

However, please feel free to test it out - anything goes (with the exception of porn

Apologies to anyone who may have tried accessing over the past few hours.

On waking this morning, found it stuck on a dreaded BSOD.

A reboot has cleared the problem...fingers crossed....

Yes that's what many have said. Not sure as to why though, as broadband speed is the same.

Had several upload photo's as a test & got told that all took only 8/10 secs, but that was from the UK. had one or 2 try from the US & they said the same.

Did find one problem though, while at a customer's recently, I tried accessing from their's & had no problem & the speed of access was a hell of a lot better than v1. The problem though was that I tried accessing one of the videos - ok, but attempts to play it threw up a dialogue with a link to MS as to why - Unfortunately, the link provided dosen't seem to exist as it took me to a totally different page on MS Technet that had no relevance to WHS.

I'm wondering if it's a codec problem, so tried accessing myself via this forum's link - access ok, but same problem, won't play the video - unusual as my system has all the relevant codecs. Just wondering if the codecs are required on the server?

Or it could be that it's still being worked on atm.....

Other than that, I think it's a major improvement over v1.

It's running boinc ok with no problems there. It's got about 2 days worth left & when completed & reported in, will shut it down & switch back to v1 as I've done all the testing required on v2. I find that the storage options, i.e., adding/removing drives a lot easier than v1. Unfortunately, due to the new format, it's too risky to use it as a media center so when it's at RTM, will use it solely as LAN backup/cruncher.

I was looking into Netgear NAS boxes, but the largest available atm is a 4x 1tb box but at close to $2000 per box, that's a bit too much. Have looked into another option which I started using on v1 sometime ago, Sumvision dual HD enclosures - plain e-sata/usb connections with no problems on adding any size hd. Only problem with them is that if used via e-sata, only 1 of the 2 drives is recognised.

At the moment though, I have 6 attached to v1 via usb with 2x 1.5 tb's in each giving me a total of 18tb. that has been working great for some time, so have ordered another 14. Was thinking of building a dedicated workstation/media center using a Coolermaster case for a total of 12 internal drives & 12 usb sockets for a total of 36 drives with 2tb drives, that should be enough my all my current media.

Just waitng for Blu-ray rewriters to become available at a reasonable cost and that should solve the backup issues.

Hi guys, apologies if anyone has attempted access in the past 2 days.... "Houston, we have a problem".......

It's been a hectic week work wise & had family have a go at me & thinking about it, can't blame them, as it's been that hectic. I find that unusual as it normally goes fairly quiet once the new school year starts....

On finishing late yesterday evening, decide to check my e-mails....should've left alone...

Had planned for a quiet relaxing non-computing weeked.....

Recieved no end of mails from the US,Canada,NZ & Australia.... they all kept getting... Cannot connect remote access. Please contact the person who manages the server. Found this extremely weird as only that morning was on Skype while a family member was accessing from Australia.

Nothing changed on any system, including servers, couldn't track the problem down as servers all showing green icons. however, I did need to use rdp as last customer of the day had a wireless access problem & really didn't want him upstairs in the workroom, so tried accessing my workstation via rdp from Andrea's. No joy. Got the problem resolved anyway.

This morning, tried rdp on all systems, again no joy, so had no choice but to look into it.

Couldn't trace the problem so posted on MS forums & got a pretty quick reply. Did what was suggested & sure enough, the problem stood out like a sore thumb....

IP Address should be showing the router's & not the ISP's. tried updating via WHS, but not working, so going to have to reboot router & if that doesn't work, reset it. Bang goes my quiet weekend... :(

Back up & running.... :P

Just required a router reset, then reconfiguring via WHS.
