Hey Guys,

No idea if anyone can answer this one, but I'll toss it out there anyway. I'm one of those nutters who fled Billy's wold, went over to Linux. My current distro is Ubuntu. Every once in a while, I get a message in the logs suggesting I upgrade the boinc client.

So, the question is, has anyone installed the client, "out of the box" from the developers, not your distro? I'm guessing that the experience would be pretty much consistent across POSIX systems. I've become a bit cautious about installing stuff directly.

Rick

Well regardless of O/S, if you already have boinc running, then an upgrade should go smoothly.

Open Applications/Terminal
sh /home/z/Downloads/boinc_6.10.58_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh
/home/z/BOINC/run_manager

These are the exact lines I put in. Change the z/Downloads/ to where ever you downloaded the file.
First line first then it will prompt you to enter the second line.
Be sure to shut off your present boinc before starting
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04
Boinc was first installed from the synaptic package manager then just updated.

I just found this method too. http://wiki.debian.org/BOINC
apt-get update
apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager

If it doesn't take you will have to uninstall Boinc first and re-install.
sudo apt-get remove boinc-client boinc-manager
sudo aptitude remove boinc-client boinc-manager

I hope that helps you.

I always did the "apt get" approach...never had any problems....

I know that leaving the boinc manager & client in place that had been installed via the Canonical method (synaptic/apt-get) and then "upgrading" manually, leaves the new manager, either graphical or terminal, communicating with the old client. The apt-get approach won't give you the latest & greatest, unless Ubuntu has kept right up to date with the developers. This is what I was asking about, how to do this cleanly, and if anyone had done it. The client is started as a daemon when the system boots, see /usr/share/doc/boinc-client/README.Debian, though this of course would not be the case if you went out on your own & installed directly from the developers, unless you are prepared to go in & edit the init scripts.
