Hey folks, just a few lines here to say hello. Grizz managed to hunt me down and invite me over. I'm usually over at canadaka.net where I stream rock music weekday mornings for those that want to tune in there.

Anyways, I'm the Team Captain of Canada at the WCG and have been cruching there pretty much since the day they opened the doors.

I like the idea of trying to get Canadians to join under one flag and did pursue this to some extent at the WCG when I had a bit more free time. For every Canadian on the team it's estimated that there is another ten Canadians out there crunching all by themselves or on some other team. What matters most though is that you are willing to donate your spare resources to a project you believe in and care about.

It would appear to me that one of the biggest obstacles is keeping the people that sign up for a project continuing it past their first technical difficulty. Those that are less savvy around the computer(like myself) don't usually make the effort to get the software running again. Hopefully future operating systems will have maintenance free grid computing.

One last thing...what exactly is this boinc thing and do I need to sign up somewhere or what???

Happy Crunching Canada!!! 8)

Great seeing ya here!
Paul

EDIT ~ SO as I'm thinking of what to type for a thread opener, I realize the Pub is the best place
to say hello! I'll just adjust the sign!

Hi RipCat
It's great to see you here we've been trying to get your attention for a while now.

As for technical difficulties we hope people will post their problems here so we can get an answer for them or answer it ourselves.

BOINC or Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing, is a program we install on our computer to run various grid computing projects including WCG, but this program will allow you to run multiple projects on one computer, Pawly runs more on one computer than anyone I know. The website is here

You can download the program here

As for the projects you can use our toolbar here or visit the projects through our Quick sign up links here

If you deside to try it, post any problems in the forum and we'll answer as quickly as possible.

He runs the WCG software not BOINC, I wasn't sure if he was kidding or not so I responded.

WCG has two clients running, Boinc and UD (United Devices)
but accord to this thread BOINC Migration Announcement on WCG they're going to use Boinc only after 2008

Yep, Boinc has a link to the WCG info that explains how to migrate over.

WCG: UD to Boinc migration directions.

I'll get around to following those directions sometime soon.
