Steve,

I think if you have the current version of BOINC you can set the CPU usage to a maximum of say 75%. I did this with my wife's laptop and it seemed to run cooler. The fan didn't run as fast either.

EDIT: This is set in the "General preferences" section of your account page of each project.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

It can be done through the BOINC manager as well in your preferances for 5.9.x or higher versions. this way you only effect the one machine and not all of them.

You are more likely to burn out a power supply, in my experience if your not overclocking the processor rarly goes. I've had some on SETI and then BOINC at 100% for 6 years and they are still going strong. I've only had to change the power supply, usually when the fan goes and maybe 1 hard drive.
