THIS IS FOR ANYBODY WANTING A CHANGE FROM WINDOWS AND ALL ITS HASSLES, UPDATES AND EXTRA COSTS.
THE VIRTUES OF PUPPY-
VERY SMALL 90 MB COMPARED TO 1.5G OR MORE FOR XP. NO MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS. PUPPY WILL RUN ON AN ANCIENT 386 33MHZ OR A 66MHZ MONOCHROME LAPTOP (AT LEAST THATS THE WORST EQUIPMENT I HAVE TRIED IT ON). ON THE 386 PUPPY RAN AS GOOD AS WIN XP ON MY AMD 1.667 GHZ WITH 1 G RAM. (YOU SHOULD SEE HOW FAST THE AMD IS WITH PUPPY, ...SMOKIN)
A GOOD INTRODUCTION GUIDE TO PUPPY.
http://tmxxine.com/Wikka/wikka.php?wakka=PuppyLinux

BURNCDCC IS THE BEST PROGRAM TO USE TO BURN AN .ISO FILE e.g. puppy-3.01-seamonkey-fulldrivers.iso TO CD OR DVD. I RECOMMEND THE 3.01 SEAMONKEY FULLDRIVERS VERSION TO START WITH. THERE ARE QUITE A FEW NEW VERSIONS AVAILABLE
BURNCDCC WORKS IN WINDOWS BTW. SO START WITH BURNCDCC FIRST. http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/utilities.html

THE PUPPY 3.01 ISO FILE IS AT http://www.puppylinux.org/user/downloads.php?cat_id=1
AND ALSO DOWNLOADABLE AT
http://unclezapaudiozap.phpbb3now.com/index.php
AND Puppy Linux.ca

I ALSO RECOMMEND DEVX 3.01.SFS FOR INSTALLING PROGRAMS AND COMPILING. (ADD IT ONTO THE CD AFTER ITS BURNED) http://s3.amazonaws.com/puppy/index.html

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCES WITH PUPPY HAVE SHOWN THAT IT IS PROBABLY BEST TO DO A FULL INSTALL TO YOUR HD, THAT IS FOR THE AVERAGE USER. BUT KEEP THE CD - DVD HANDY. ITS GREAT FOR A TROUBLESHOOTING TOOL NO MATTER WHAT O/S IS ON THE SYSTEM. I HAVE SAVED FILES AND A FEW COMPUTES FROM THE TRASH HEAP. YOU CAN BOOT UP WITH IT ON ANYBODY'S COMPUTE AND WHEN YOU'RE DONE JUST REBOOT BACK INTO THE SYSTEM'S O/S AND IT DOESN'T CHANGE ANYTHING ON THE SYSTEM. BESIDES USING A CD OR DVD IT CAN BE LOADED ONTO A FLASH DRIVE OR USB CARD OR A FLASH CARD LIKE FROM A DIGITAL CAMERA TO FIT ON YOUR POCKET. ALL YOUR PERSONAL PREFERENCES AND BOOKMARKS GO WITH YOU AND WHEN YOU BOOT UP ON ANOTHER SYSTEM IT LOOKS LIKE YOUR OWN, YOU CAN USE PUPPY WITH NO HARD DRIVE SINCE IT BOOTS FROM THE CD AND RUNS IN MEMORY WHEN BOOTED FROM THE LIVE CD. SO ABSOLUTE SYSTEM MINIMUM WOULD BE A MOTHERBOARD, CPU, AT LEAST 128 MB OF MEMORY AND A CD ROM.
OH MY OH MY. I COULD BABBLE ON FOR HOURS ABOUT PUPPY. NEXT TIME WINDOWS WANTS TO UPDATE SOMETHING THINK OF PUPPY. GIVE IT A TRY, ALL IT WILL COST YOU IS A CD AND A BIT OF TIME. I NOW HAVE 4 COMPUTERS IN TOTAL RUNNIN IT AND PERFORMANCE IS AMAZING.

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO PM ME OR POST HERE ON ANY QUESTIONS.

FOR THOSE THAT JUST HAVE TO BE CRUNCHIN

HOW TO INSTALL BOINC IN PUPPY LINUX
SAME PROCEDURE FOR MOST LINUX DISTROS

Open roxfiler click arrow till home ' / ' Create new directory in ' / ' called BOINC

Download boinc_5.8.16_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh to 'BOINC' folder
Website will show this file when download button is clicked if using puppy.

Open roxfiler click arrow till home ' / ' find BOINC folder
click to boinc_5.8.16_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh

Right click select permissions
Change permissions to executable

Right click again on same file and select 'window' then 'terminal here'

Run (type in) ./boinc_5.8.16_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh

Run ./run_client

Run ./run_manager or run ./boincmgr

Or just try clicking on the icon in roxfiler first

HEY GRIZZ
YES YOU CAN INSTALL TO A DUAL BOOT USING 'GRUB'. I HAVE USED DUAL BOOT FOR A PARTITIONED HD AND WITH 2 HDS. THERE IS ALSO A PROGRAM CALLED WINE TO RUN REAL WINDOWS PROGRAMS. THERE IS ALSO A WAY TO BOOTUP PUPPY FROM INSIDE WINDOWS WITHOUT EXITING WINDOWS,

BTW. MANY THANKS FOR THE AVATARS. MUCHLY APPRECIATED.

AN ANSWER TO THAT IS A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE NOW RUNNING PUPPY STRICTLY OFF THE LIVE CD AND NOT BOTHERING WITH ANY INSTALLS AT ALL. JUST SAVE TO CD WHEN SHUTTING DOWN. I FIND THAT A LIVE CD OR DVD THAT HAS MORE THAN A COUPLE OF SAVES ON IT, BOOTUP TIME SLOWS DOWN AND A FRESH CD IS NEEDED. A SIMPLE PROCESS OF ONLY A FEW CLICKS.
BUT PERSONALLY I THINK THAT WITH A FULLY LOADED INSTALL (INCLUDING ALL MY EXTRAS) LEAVING A FOOTPRINT OF UNDER 200 MB, WHY NOT INSTALL IT? I INSTALLED PUPPY ON MY LITTLE 12G HD AND LEFT XP ON THE 200G. MOST OF THE BIG STUFF GOES ONTO THE 200G INTO FOLDERS ACCESSABLE FROM BOTH PUPPY AND WINDOZE. THE 200G IS TREATED MORE LIKE A STORAGE UNIT. I KEEP XP AROUND FOR SOME OF MY FAVORITE DRIVING GAMES MOSTLY. TO GET FROM PUPPY TO WINDOZE OR VICE VERSA I JUST SHUT DOWN AND REBOOT TO A SCREEN WITH A CHOICE (GRUB)
DARN THERE I GO AGAIN. I MUST TRY TO KEEP THESE POSTS A BIT BRIEFER IN THE FUTURE.
MORE PUPPY INFO TO COME

HEY JAMES
GREAT IDEA. A FLASH DRIVE IS NOT ONE I'VE TRIED YET. BUT PLANNING TO SHORTLY. I KNOW IT WORKS ON MY MACHINES WITH A 256 MB FLASHCARD FROM A CAMERA. IT WILL BOOT A BIT SLOWER THAN A HD FULL INSTALL. IF YOU HAVE ANY BOOT PROBLEMS CHECK OUT THE FORUM POSTED IN HERE. I KNOW THERE IS A FAIR BIT ON FLASH DRIVES.
GOOD LUCK JAMES , I'LL BE WATCHING

#1-Puppy Linux: Don't buy a new computer - download a better one.

A few more maybe.

Puppy Linux: Now you're barking up the right OS.
Puppy Linux: More bark, less bytes.

AFTER SPENDING A COUPLE OF DAYS PLAYING WITH LINUX DISTROS I DECIDED TO JOT DOWN SOME NOTES ON EACH. ......THESE NOTES ARE MY OPINIONS ONLY AND BASED ON COMPARING AGAINST PUPPY AND UBUNTU, THE 2 LINUX DISTROS I HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH.

SO FAR I HAVE 2 THAT I LIKE MOST. DAMN SMALL LINUX AND SLAX . DYNEBOLIC MIGHT END UP ON AN OLD HD AS WELL.
THERE ARE STILL A COUPLE HUNDRED DISTROS OUT THERE SO I HAVE ONLY SCRATCHED THE SURFACE HERE. THERE ARE STILL SOME I WANT TO LOOK AT. IF ANYONE WANTS TO TRY OUT A BUNCH OF DISTROS, I SUGGEST YOU GET SOME CD-RW'S THAT WAY YOU CAN TRY OUT A VERSION THEN ERASE IT AND TRY ANOTHER. I USED ONE CD-RW TO TEST ALL THESE.
I HOPE THAT THIS INFO WILL BE HELPFUL IN MAKING A DECISION ABOUT WHAT DISTRO TO TRY OUT.
FOR A GOOD DESCRIPTION OF LINUX DISTROS GO TO http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/

DAMN SMALL LINUX 50 MB ISO
SIMPLE LIKE PUPPY- MENU IS RIGHT CLICK ONLY, SIMPLE, EASY, VERY NICE
MY DSL EXTENSION TOOL- GOOD PACKAGE MANAGER, GREAT SELECTION.
TASK BAR SHOWS ONE APP AT A TIME WITH ARROWS, TOO SMALL.
BOX IN LOWER RIGHT HAS NEAT DRIVE MOUNTER. SIMPLE VOLUME - MIXER THAT LOOKS TOO BASIC. A NICE BASIC LINUX THAT IS MEANT TO ADD WHAT YOU NEED WITHOUT A LOT OF EXTRAS.

KNOPPIX 697 MB ISO
COLORFUL BOOT UP TEXT, ALL WRITTEN FOR IT.
3 SEPERATE MENUS, RIGHT CLICK ON DESKTOP GIVES WIN STYLE DESKTOP MENU, KDE MENU, AND AN ADDED APPS MENU. ALL KDE BASED APPS. MENU ITEM NAMES ARE ACTUAL LINUX PROGRAM NAMES - NO DESCRIPTIONS. SYNAPTIC PACKAGE MANAGER. WINE INCLUDED IN INSTALL. FAR TOO MANY CHOICES FOR EACH BRANCH OF MENU. LOOKS LIKE FULL INSTALL OF KDE LINUX. USEABLE BUT BULKY AND FOR LINUX-WISE

ARK H2O 2007.1 699 MB ISO
HD INSTALL ONLY, INSTALLS ALL PROGRAMS IN ISO. 1 HOUR TO INSTALL. GENERAL MIX OF LINUX STUFF, SOME KDE BASED. VERY COMPLETE LINUX, SEEMS TO HAVE JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING. LOOKS MORE LIKE A COMMERCIAL, PROFESSIONAL BUILD. CONSIDERING A 2 GIG FOOTPRINT ITS ACTUALLY PRETTY FAST TO USE. FOR THE LINUX-WISE.

FEATHER LINUX 120 MB ISO
SIMPLE - LARGE ICONS WITH ALL PROGRAMS WITH ACTUAL LINUX NAMES. RIGHT CLICK MENU . NOT AS SMOOTH OR CLEAN AS PUPPY. MORE FOR THE LINUX-WISE. OLDER KERNEL 2.4.27

SLAX 193 MB ISO
KDE OR FLUXBOX , ALL APS K BASED OF BEST QUALITY. ALL CAREFULLY SELECTED. NO MULTIPLES. RIGHT CLICK MENU SIMPLE AND CLEAN WITH SIMPLE NAMES. NO PACKAGE HANDLERS. INSTALL LOOKS A BIT TRICKY. SEEMED A BIT GLITCHY RUNNING FROM LIVE CD. ITS WORTH TRYING AN INSTALL TO TRY IT OUT. LINUX-WISE INSTALL, WINDOWS STYLE USE.
UPDATE ON SLAX, IT IS REALLY ONLY A LIVE CD. INSTALLATION IS NOT RECOMMENDED BY SLAX.

DYNEBOLIC 692 MB ISO
VERSATILE BOOT OPTIONS. XFCE BASED. LARGE MENU - ACTUAL LINUX NAMES WITH DESCRIPTIONS. A BIT NICER AND EASIER THAN UBUNTU. VERY CUSTOMIZEABLE. 27 PAGE PDF MANUAL. NICE MOVING BAR BESIDE VOLUME CONTROL. A FULLY LOADED LINUX.

A FURTHER NOTE ON TRYING MULTIPLE LINUX DISTROS.
TO REALLY TRY OUT A DISTRO ITS BEST TO INSTALL IT ONTO A HARD DRIVE.
HEAD FOR YOUR LOCAL COMPUTER RECYCLING STORE AND LOOK FOR SOME OLDER SMALL HD'S. I JUST PICKED UP 2 - 4.3G HARD DRIVES FOR ABOUT A BUCK A GIG. TOTAL COST FOR BOTH WAS $9.40. PLENTY BIG ENOUGH FOR ANY LINUX DISTRO I'VE TRIED. AT $4 EACH THATS PRETTY CHEAP STORAGE. IT DOESN'T HURT TO HAVE A HD LYING AROUND READY TO BOOTUP JUST IN CASE. I SWAP HD'S AROUND LIKE "GRIZZ" DOES BOXES. :) I ALSO USE AN OLD HD LIKE THAT TO TRANSFER FILES AROUND THAT ARE BIGGER THAN A DVD. FILE TRANSFER IS QUICK WHEN IT IS THE SLAVE. JUST BE SURE TO REMOVE ANY OTHER HD'S WHILE INSTALLING ANY DISTRO. I MESSED UP MY ADOBE FLASH PLAYER IN PUPPY BY LEAVING THE HD IN WHILE PLAYING WITH WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A "LIVE CD" . I SURE AM GLAD THAT PUPPY IS SO EASY TO FIX SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

HERE IS AN EMAIL I RECEIVED FROM ERIC OF PUPPYLINUX.CA
HE HAS BEEN INVITED TO CHECK US OUT AS WELL AS JOIN.
Quote:
Howdy Calgary,ZAPPDOG,

Thanks for the posts on your forum. Sorry it took so long to reply..I have been getting server overloads so I may have to limit downloads per person....I don't want to as some people need the extra connections with a slow isp/connection...but I have had an abuse of my server so what can I do. When you talk to your group please remind them to being kind to others using puppylinux.ca.

When I get more time I'll jump onto your forum and say hi...looks good...and yup puppy is great little distro....but be careful, puppy is addicting..lol

My server is not just a front page...I also (and this is one of my main puppy projects) host many of the developers and provide space/bandwidth for people all over the world to help spread out bandwidth...I hope it makes for a better puppy experience all around...no more servers going down because of bandwidth exceeded messages (well maybe).

Another proud canuck..eh! You know Canada just is the best!

Be Well in Calgary ,
Eric

Just running it from CD for now (still have that pile of hard drives to sort through - 9 on my desk so far and another 10-15 elsewhere). Once I have it cleaned up I'll do a full install and see how it goes. So far so good - a few more setup questions on boot then some of the other distros, but all very basic so it wasn't a problem - it just meant I had to actually sit there while it booted (fairly quick boot, so once again not too much of a problem). The only thing that slowed me down for a minute was configuring my internet connection - most CD-based distros I've run autoconfigure for DHCP on boot so it took me a minute to check my network cable (it's missing the "clip" and occassionally pops out!). I was about to try to find a terminal emulator to use ifconfig before I realized they had a "connect" icon on the desktop. I guess if I spent 10 seconds and actually read all the large writing on the desktop I would have figured this all out a little quicker, but I guess that just made too much sense!

It also has a little different interface than I'm used to, but it didn't take long to figure out where everything I needed to get BOINC up and running was (i.e. how to make an sh file executable). All in all, I was up and running BOINC in 15 minutes or less so who am I to complain?

Eventually I might get around to customizing an ISO for BOINC use (I've customized several other CD based linux distros in the past), but with the way things have been going on around here I wouldn't hold my breath for it..

I noticed it comes with a VNC client (TightVNC) and has rdesktop built in for RDP, but do you know if there's a non-command line rdp client as well? I know Ubuntu and KNOPPIX both have a graphical app for this, but I couldn't find one in my quick scan of the default installed programs. Not a show stopper as far as I'm concerned as I'll just write a sh script for the comps I need to access regularly.

HEY USER312
HOLY SMOKES. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE WAY AHEAD OF ME WITH LINUX.
I REALLY LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING YOUR OPINIONS AFTER PLAYING WITH PUPPY AFTER A BIT.
AS FOR THE VNC CLIENT, THERE ARE 2 POSSIBILITIES.
ONE YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE FULL VERSION. PUPPY CONTAINS A STRIPPED DOWN VERSION.
http://www.tightvnc.com/download.html

OR YOU CAN TRY THE REMOTE DESKTOP RDP CLIENT ALSO ALREADY IN PUPPY. I HAVEN'T TRIED THIS ONE MYSELF YET BUT I KNOW IT WORKS PRETTY GOOD. I HAVE MOSTLY JUST USED SAMBA'S
LIN NEIGHBORHOOD FOR FILE SHARING BETWEEN MY PII 350 AND THIS AMD USING COMBOS OF PUPPY TO PUPPY AND PUPPY TO XP. NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH IT.
PLAYING WITH REMOTE DESKTOP OF SOME SORT IS IN THE PLANS REAL SOON. I DO LIKE THE POSSIBLE CONTROL OVER THE SAMBA'S FILE SHARING.
KEEP ME POSTED ON HOW YOU MAKE OUT. PERHAPS I'LL DO IT MYSELF SOONER RATHER THAN LATER.
ACTUALLY I'D LIKE TO HEAR ABOUT ANYBODY'S VNC OR REMOTE DESKTOP SETUP. WHAT IS BEST ??
LATER

HOLY SMOKES. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE WAY AHEAD OF ME WITH LINUX.

I wouldn't go that far - I just muddle my way through. I grew up in the DOS era so I'm pretty comfortable with the command prompt and batch files so I naturally transfer that to Linux. The only problem I have is I don't know all the Linux commands yet, and the ones I do know I certainly haven't "mastered" (there are far too many switches, etc - much more powerful than any DOS command). Most of what I know I learned through Google and trial and error...

I don't have a whole lot of time right now to play with it, but I've at least moved it up the queue a bit...

The Puppy stripped down client is fine for now. I'll figure out the server side of things once I get around to doing a hard drive install...

As I mentioned - it has rdesktop which is a console based app which I can get by with (I've used it for a few years now...). I don't readily see a GUI one installed or in the PET packages either (although I could just be blind!).

I personally prefer RDP for controlling Windows PCs as it has a little less network overhead so the graphics are a more fluid than VNC. However, RDP does NOT connect you to the console of the machine you're controlling while VNC does. This is an important distinction when it comes to Windows XP as if you connect to a Windows XP PC using RDP it will log you off of your console session (it'll prompt you first) in order to log you into the RDP, effectively closing any open applications and losing any unsaved work (there are ways to force XP to allow multiple logons for RDP, but I won't go into that as they require a bit of hacking or paying lots of money). Since VNC will connect you directly to your computer as you left it (directly to the console), it might be a safer bet.

The only remote control application I've used for Linux is VNC and it works fine...

Hey Canucks,

I am Eric from puppylinux.ca and wanted to drop by.

Thanks zappdog for the kind words and the help with spreading the word about Puppy Linux Canada.

I saw here where a USB install was being looked at...That is what I run mainly. I have 3 or 4 usb Sandisk Cruzers and have a different version on each (from 512mb to 4gb)...very handy! check out wNop at http://www.puppylinux.ca/puppyfiles/custom/. wNOP has the nVidia accelerator built in with Compiz-Fusion for that really cool windows effects and will have the ATI stuff soon for those with ATI video cards.

Also a frugal install is perfect for a portable OS...just boot with a live CD and save the pup_save file back to a usb flash stick...and voila your OS will work on nearly every computer you boot into and your personal files will just be there...works well!

Thanks again and be well all,
Eric/caneri
