I am fortunate to live near a top 10 birding spot in North America. Point Pelee National Park, is located near my home Leamington, Ontario and found on the southernmost tip of Canada's mainland. It became a National Park in 1918, and it was named by French explorers "Pointe Pelee" meaning “bald point”, referring to the lack of vegetation at the tip. Since we have the same latitude as Northern California, we have a warm climate for the “Carolinian” woods and many birding species normally found further South. Last year Birders compiled a checklist of 383 species spotted in the park. Each spring and fall thousands of birds are funneled through this area. The park is well known for the large numbers of songbirds, especially wood warblers. Pelee also has one of the largest remaining Wetlands (Barrier Beach Marshes) in the country un-scarred by human development.

My wife, son and I took a brief one hour hike through the wetlands, and in that short time my camera was filled with pics.

Birding season is upon us soon again here, and I hope I can add a few more good shots of spring boosting the park into life.

Anyways hope ya enjoy :D

WOW!! Those are really excellent quality Close Ups! Please keep them coming as that is exactly what I had in mind for this section.

I love camping but haven't been to Point Pelee. I'll mention it to my Lady this year when we start planning our next trek.

Sorry can't resist-those pictures are for the birds.

I hang my head in shame and apologize once again (well except the one of the turtle)

Looking South towards the tip. Southern most part of mainland Canada is just past that tree line.

Enjoy, more to come soon.

Great photos Sixpack! I was born and raised in Windsor. Spent many days at Point Pelee. Of course in High School we had some good parties on West Beach.
The Boardwalk photo brings back some memories from grade 8. :-D :-D :-D

Thanks,
BB

It was awesome to see these pics; Leamington is my home town. I used to live a block away from Heinz, and walked by it every day to go to school (AFTER hitting the corner store for a crapload of candy to fortify me for the day, of course.) :smug:

Thanks a bunch for the post!

No problem. =) I grew up near QE Public, so I know the sounds of Heinz well. The Whistle still blows at noon ;)

Awesome pics! It's been a few years since my last visit to PPNP.

What camera did you use to take these pics SixPack? I'm going to upgrade to a DSLR as soon as my wife lets me....I could be waiting a long time. :(

Hopefully I haven't necroposted...

Gorgeous photos. PP is just a 2 hour jaunt for me. Now I can't wait for spring. Thanks for the inspiration in January!
