HOWDY ALL
I WAS JUST CRUISIN THE ABC@HOME SITE SATISFYING SOME CURIOSITY OR ... TRYING TO.
HAVING ONLY A GRADE 8 EDUCATION I HAVE SELF-TAUGHT MYSELF SOME OF THE HIGHER MATHS IN ELECTRONICS AND PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY
BUT I HAVE TROUBLE WITH THIS FORMULA. I READ THE .PDF FILE ON IT ABC CONJECTURE
BUT IT SEEMS A BIT TOO ADVANCED FOR ME. IT IS A SIMPLE LOOKING FORMULA BUT...

What is the ABC conjecture?
The ABC conjecture involves abc-triples: positive integers a,b,c such that a+b=c, a < b <c> rad(abc), the so-called radical of abc. The ABC conjecture says that there are only finitely many a,b,c such that log(c)/log(rad(abc)) > h for any real h > 1. The ABC conjecture is currently one of the greatest open problems in mathematics. If it is proven to be true, a lot of other open problems can be answered directly from it.

IF SOMEONE HAS A SIMPLE EXPLANATION OR A LINK TO ONE I WOULD APPRECIATE IT

DR.Z

Hmm. I love the ABC concept ever since that guy(Wise) my gr 12 Physics math teacher put it in my head there was more to school than girls and well girls. I had to write a paper on it, and to put it down in a couple of paragraphs is just about mind blowing. Maybe everyone can give me a hand on this, but I relate it to 5x5=25 square it back to 5 just to make sure, then put a log to it??? and then back and forth.

Or just take Einstein's idea of light. if you go the speed of light time will stop, hmmmmm light goes the speed of light so why does light still move thru time and space?? Just one that has bugged me for a long time.

@ PHILZIE

WELL I THANK YOU FOR THAT EXPLANATION. IT REALLY HELPS ALTHOUGH THE "LOG" PART OF IT IS A BIT IF A ?
I'LL LOOK THROUGH SOME OLD MATH FILES AND SEE WHAT I CAN FIND. I'LL PROBABLY HAVE TO WRITE IT OUT AND TRY WORKING IT ON PAPER. MATH PROBLEMS SEEM EASIER ON PAPER FOR SOME REASON.

AS FOR YOUR QUESTION :
I COULD GET LOST ON THE NET FOR A WEEK TRYING TO FIND THAT ANSWER.
ITS A GREAT QUESTION AND I WILL KEEP MY EYES OPEN FOR THE ANSWER.
THE ANSWER IS OUT THERE SOMEWHERE.
THERE ARE A NUMBER OF ASTROLOGICAL SITES I VISIT REGULAR.
ACTUALLY EINSTEIN COULD HAVE BEEN WRONG TOO

Looks like ABC is the one for this month. I'll start switching some boxes over.

In about an hour's time, all poem@home wu's will have been crunched, then I'll have 12 cores crunching away on ABC.

However, come May 1st, I will be putting all those cores to work on seti, as I've put the chicken app on all X2's & the X4. I want to see how they fare & also to beef up my seti credit to over 200K.

Will return to competition crunching June 1st.

I'm sitting this one out - I've got enough ABC credits for now and want to beef up a few other projects in the meantime...

Just my luck. Just finished upgrading & cleaning up a customer's laptop & got his permission to install boinc & seti is down.

Oh well, another permanent attachment to another project. This time, ABC.. Now 13 cores!

You can always use BAM and change projects whenever you feel like through the web interface. Just create a separate profile for your "permanent" attachments and set the connect to BAM setting to once a week/month/whatever. You can then set projects to "no new tasks", add/remove projects, set resource shares, etc all from the comfort of your computer chair. Changes will take a "week/month/whatever" to take place, but at least you'll be able to make changes!

Edit: Oh, yeah - in case you didn't know BAM can be found via BOINCStats:

http://boincstats.com/bam/

Thanks User312. Will BAM work on external rigs? I.e., customer rigs where Boinc is authorised?

Just for info guys. Cosmology is experiencing serious problems, & a further problem has just cropped up. Some wu's are getting to 95/98% then restarting from 60%.

As for ABC, just got a lovely surprise. One of my completed wu's was what they call a long one. Claimed 160.xx Credits but awarded 1000. :wow:

Would love a few of them every week on the quad!

Yes, I like it also. But how did you manage that?

@User312 - Thanks again. 8 rigs attached to bam with the 9th hopefully, later this evening. As for the rest, I'll do them when they come in for a Service/Upgrade/Repair.

@Grizz - Thanks for the team standings.

No problem. I've been using it for a long time now and find it helps when managing all the comps in my farm. Unfortunately I can't use it for all of them, but the ones I use it for it's great for adding/removing projects. The only real drawback is that there's no easy way to tell what the cache level is like on each PC so you never know if you're going to lose crunching time or not. To get around this I simply leave the "old" project at "no new tasks" for a week or so just to clear things out. I also set the cache level pretty low (0.1 day or something silly like that - can't remember right now) so there isn't a lot of work to burn through before the "new" project starts full time.

One real big thing to take into account when installing on other users PCs (as you probably are already aware) is to take into account project stability/error messages. Take a project like Superlink as an example: I never run this on non-dedicated PCs as it will generate an error in a pop-up window when the PC is rebooted in the middle of a wu (not sure if it always does this, but I've seen it enough times to know it's an issue) which can be alarming to some users. Stick to the bigger projects and you shouldn't have any issues.

The DB was down for a bit and i had over 10000 pending credits. When the DB came back on, It give me some off them. I still have over 5000 pending and some wu's that I cant send on some off my box now. DB down again but I will get the points for it later.

We going to need some help if we are going for 5 mills. Some off our big crunchers are not part off this run. Lets hope for the best.
