Hey Sirius

Sorry Dude your going have to settle for 2nd place. :-D
According to Boincstats and stats.free-dc lunja and I won't catch you by the end of the month.

Doesn't mean we're not going try.

Cheers

Nope, just checked - Lunja will knock me off 2nd by RAC - He's now only 59 behind me

That's a shame as I thought it would be an interesting finish. Also, just added another host (laptop that customer says is in constant use).

It lost internet connection over a week ago & she could not understand why. Took me over an hour to find out why - it had norton & it was somehow interfering with the firewall settings. simple answer was to uninstall, install AVG & boinc with her permission. Showed her how efficient it was as a diagnostics tool (her nephew already has it on his & also recommended it), so hopefully, she'll let me install iton her brother's desktop & laptop.

Sirius - Just an FYI in case you didnt' know - laptops tend to have overheating issues when running BOINC, so you may want to limit the CPU usage for that particular hosts preferences.

Thanks User312, any idea as to what is the best percentage?

@ Frank Encruncher, well done. According to allprojectstats, you're now 2nd by rac. With 9 days to go, can Lunja knock me off 3rd spot?

It's not that. Due to a particular problem been experienced here at the moment, I can't afford to waste money buliding my Q6600 quad. Also, there is 5 rigs, I can't upgrade boinc & put BAM on until they come in for a service. Until that happens, I really can't compete with Frank or Lunja.

Anyway, I'll definitely retain 4th

Thanks Timmy. However, with only a couple of rigs, you're not doing too bad yourself. Have you checked as to when you'll hit your 1st million?

You're doing okay. It's not all about how fast or how many. It's even better when you're a part of a good team - LIKE this one

That should be no problem, you're in 8th at the moment with Rintaran just behind you. With 9 days to go, I can't see you or Rintaran getting caught.

Frank Encruncher has streaked ahead of me by over 300 points, so there's no way I can catch him on RAC. Not sure about Lunga. No matter though, all of us have really hit this project good. I really hope that we can hit the 5 mill. 8)

On TC, I don't think Lunja or you can catch me, but on the RAC, you've shot past me & I think Lunja may just do so before the end. Mo matter, top 5 will do me nicely.

Well done though on that burst of speed! I didn't think that you would catch me before the end of this week.

My philosophy is no install on laptops, so I can't really help on that one but my guess is that it would vary on the particular laptop manufacturer as they will all have slightly different tolerences based on design and components. That being said, the numbers I've seen around vary from 60%-85%. Keep in mind BOINC doesn't do any real CPU throttling as of yet, it just takes 100% CPU for whatever value you set and 0% for the rest (e.g. if you set it to 50% it'll take 100% for one second, 0% for the next second, 100% for the next, and so on...) so the user will see odd CPU spiking if they care to look. If you do a search on the SETI forums (or just ask in your own thread) you'll likely find some more knowledgable (and likely even contradictory) answers.

As far as configuring it remotely (since it's already in the field) you can simply modify one of the built in BOINC profile types (work, home, etc) and change the laptops profile membership within ABCs website (as you're currently crunching with it there - you could also do all of this from within BAM as well) to do what you want. The next time the computer connects to ABC (or BAM) it will update it's profile type and crunch based on it's new setttings.

Good luck!

I run it 100% on my HP Compaq nc6400. It's a little workhorse! I always keep it raised and when doing real work, I usually throttle it down. You also need to clean them out regularly as they clog very easily. I don't worry too much as it's my work pc ;)

The machine I put on POTM has died. I don't know yet what the problem is but I hope the HD isn't fried. It was also my day to day machine.

If we haven't reached it by the 30th, I'm going to leave my rigs running ABC until the Mayday Bank Holiday(5th).

I stopped my Folding @Home project for the moment, I'll throw on my last machine.

5 Million here we come

I have 13,000 credits pending, looking at the stats page my guess there is probably at least 50,000 credits in pending for the team

That would mean we only need to 4,950,000 by the end of the month
Doing the math.........

we need aboot 430,000 in eight days or 53,750 credits per day

I think it's do able

We had a good day yesterday 58,000
:bounce:

Thanks for the stats Frank - I hope we do it by the 30th.

On a sadder note, Lunja is definitely going to bump me down to 4th. It should happen some time tomorrow evening:

Slight hiccup on project. Shut Andrea's rig down for what I though would only take me bout an hour. Instead, took me over 4 hours. Swapped out all kit of rig to put in a cube. Pretty nice case, however, it was a twin deck & it was very awkward to reinstall cables, kit was no problem. Up & running now, & also a fan less & very very quiet.

Then shut down quad for what I thought would be a short break to install Puppy Linux on Backplane, only to experience niggling problems. Hope Zappdog can help out. So switched back to XP.

As I thought, Lunja bumped me
