Hi Guys. This is not a query as such, just comments on the O/S.

Popped down to London on Saturday to stock up on some kit & managed to get a cracking good deal on Vista Business - Have made arrangements with supplier for next trip to buy in bulk (As an MS Partner, I am able to get copies from an authorised distributer, but there is no way at this moment in time they can compete with this price - also hoping that some time in the very near future, he'll have Vista Ultimate @ the same price....drooling already).

Popped a new HD into one of the 2 remaining slots in a backplane & installed it. On Vista's performance scale, the rig is not too bad. 3x 5.9's & 1x 5.8. Only come across 2 niggling problems at the moment. 1: on rebooting, boinc is blocked & as informed by Ageless on S@H, have to reinstall Boinc as a service, which I will do when it has finishing crunching wu's already on system.

2: Talk about a catch 22 situation: Vista's network map sees all rigs & shared drives, however they all appear at the bottom & not correctly placed on map. Checked out the troubleshooter & found that it must be set as a private network, file & printer sharing on with an exception in the firewall. Then it will enable LLTD & Responder which should place everything correctly on the network map.

Surprise, surprise - Microsoft says, Aha, you have XP machines on the network, you must install LLTD responder on each XP machine. OK, no problem, d/l'ed it & attempted to install it. Uh,uh, Microsoft now says, sorry, the copy on your machine is later than the one you're attempting to install. Weird, & it still doesn't work.

I must admit, after my nasty disaster last January(07), when Vista Ultimate (pretty sure now that the copy I had was a very good counterfeit) crashed my net & corrupted most of my media files (thank Gawd, I had copies), I am beginning to like Vista (sssssshhhhhhhh, musn't let the XP rigs hear, they might rebel).

Anyone else using Vista & come across any foibles?

I've got to take my hat off to Sys Admins. They really are the "Knees Bees" when it comes to tweaking & workarounds. Still can't get LLTD to work under XP SP3 & while searching the forums for solutions, came across one where that very same update can be tweaked to work under Windows Home Server.

Was a bit wary of diving under the hood of the server, but took the chance & "By Jove, Old Chaps" (Old British humour), it worked

Still bugged by Vista's UAC, but like XP when it first came out, I didn't like it & swore I'd stick to Win98SE. 10 years on & I look like an idiot :oops2:

Just finished installing Office 2007 on it & that suite really bugs me  From MSWorks v2 to v8 & Office 4.3 Pro to 2000 Pro, there have been changes but overall, it was easy to upgrade with an easy learning curve. 2007, I have to start all over

If there is anyone that runs a network with XP & Vista & have the Network Map showing all devices correctly, I would be grateful if they post the solution. :-D

After checking out various forums, got fed up of trying for a workaround & did the next best thing. Uninstalled SP3 from all rigs, installed LLTD Responder, reinstalled SP3 & presto, all working well.

So far, only problem left with Vista is to finish off the wu's, detach, uninstall, then reinstall Boinc as a service. That way, I don't have to worry about it being blocked every time it reboots. :-D

Also, I couldn't believe my luck - Got all necessay drivers for Laser/Inkjet printers, & By Jove, they work!

Question: - A lot of IT techs state that disabling UAC on Vista can lead to problems. With a firewall & AV in place, just how bad is disabling it? Ideas anyone?

I'm beginning to like Vista but UAC is completely frying my brain cells

Question for Vista crunchers.: -

After reinstalling boinc as a service to workaround UAC, I have noticed that Boinc Manager is extremely slow. Whenever I click on a tab, it takes up to 90 seconds. Sometimes on clicking, the active title bar states "not responding".

Current specs: - 9500 Phenom - 250/400 HD's - 4gb DDR800 - 8500 gpu. Vista Business, AVG, cpu-z Office 2007 & speedfan. No other programs installed as yet. IE7 & Office 2007's access pretty reasonable.

Anyone else with the same problem?

In general I have noticed no difference running BOINC under Vista, other than the usual minor issues with UAC. I have it running on a few machines at present that way.
