Hi guys, it looks like I've come across my 1st serious problem with Vista. Several hours ago, I finished working on some files & wanted to put them on disk. On putting a blank cd in drive, my cd burner stated no drive detected. Found this unusal so checked via my computer - both optical drives missing.

Rebooted & entered bios, both drives detected, so thought there could be a problem with the ide controller (all HD's are sata). Popped in a O/S disk & rebooted. No problems, so checked second drive, same there, no problems.

Next step, I rebooted with O/S disk & checked repair. Tried everything. Still no joy.

Have checked in Vista Inside Out & can't find anything to help.

Anyone have any idea as to what I can do asides from checking through various restore options via Home Server or a fresh install?

Problem solved. Had to go back 5 days via Home Server backups. Nothing new had been added to system, so only conclusion was another MS Windows Update cockup

I had exactly the same problem about a week ago, and at the time thought it was becasue of a new data acquistion ap I had installed (with much difficulty and gnashing of teeth). Like you, I had to reboot to get Vista to admit I had an optical drive. It happened a couple of time later, same solution.

What did you do to get rid of it permanently?

It happened again this morning, so went to MS for assistance (Original problem, I used Windows Home Server Restore).

Found this solution & it works so I hope it solves your problem as well.

Fix-It

I remember having this issue on a WinXP laptop years ago and using the registry hack to fix it. Forgot all about that till I looked at the kb article...

Any idea as to what's causes it? My vista workstation has had no new programs for quite a while, so the only conclusion I came to was a Windows Update that was at fault.
