Got a rig to try & repair Sat morning, but was in London. Guy left it with a message. Didn't have time to work on it Sat, but just finished working on it now.

The guy has had this rig for approx 4 years & running XP Pro & the problems as stated by him were: - no display on monitor, no mouse working & he thought the HD was U/S.

The psu, fans, case & drives were literally smothered in dust, so much so, it looked like it was burnt in. Cleaned it up & ran repair on drive (corrupt mbr). Rig now working ok. He is thinking of buying a more recent rig (getting sales technique brushed up & have teaser rig ready).

If he does & gets rid of this rig, is it worth part-exchanging & upgrading?

Compaq EVO W6000 specs:

W6000 2 socket Mobo
1x Intel Xeon 2.0ghz Socket 603 cpu
1x FD
2x IDE
1x SCSI
4x ram (2x 256mb ecc & 2x 128mb ecc)
4x usb
1x RJ45

not a bad little rig but something that probably would only interest a small business owner somewhere who is just setting up with limited coin of the realm - might be worth upgrading as much as possible for that ... all depends on the initial price.

Being a local small business, I thought that might be sufficient to get a reasonable public server up & running at minimal cost. While repairing it, I checked on the net & found a Xeon 2.ghz + HS for approx £30.00. It all depends on whether or not he goes for one of my systems. I reckon he would accept £50 - £75 in part-exchange as he was given it for free.

Did a little poking about - found this;

Compaq Evo Workstation W6000

REVIEW DATE:09.17.02

# Product: Compaq Evo Workstation W6000
# Specifications: Dual 2.4-GHz Xeon, 1GB RDRAM, 35GB hard drive, Compaq Quadro4 900 XGL graphics card
by Jon A. Hill

As much as the HP x4000 workstation seems to reflect the company's Unix workstation roots, the "new HP" Compaq Evo Workstation W6000 seems to have welled up from the old Compaq's PC background. The W6000 has the smallest footprint of any of the high-end systems we reviewed. It performed well on our benchmark tests, but limited room for internal expansion and a lack of 64-bit PCI slots—a hindrance for those who want to use an IDE RAID card or Gigabit Ethernet—may hold it back from acceptance in certain markets.

Internal cooling is maintained via a single fan, and though clear plastic baffles ensure that the CPUs remain cool, we worry that the airflow is a bit insufficient. The small case, which can be configured as either a minitower or desktop, has room for a total of three 5.25-inch drive bays. In our test machine, however, one slot is filled with a CD-RW drive and another is taken up by a floppy disk drive.

For most users, the W6000 is limited to a total of two internal drive bays. (Compaq offers a larger workstation case in its Evo 8000 line.) For now, the "new HP" intends to continue producing the W6000, along with Compaq's support packages and infrastructure. Altiris eXpress provides remote management for the Compaq-branded workstations, for example.

The W6000's single 10,000-rpm hard drive hurt the system's performance on our hard drive–intensive Photoshop suite, compared with other high-end systems using 15,000-rpm drives. The W6000's SPECviewperf 7.0 results were very close to those of the IBM IntelliStation M Pro 6850-67U, HP x4000, and Polywell Poly 930X4-2400. The W6000's results on Maya Application Benchmark, SPECapc, 3ds max MaxBench, and AutoCAD tests were also in line with the majority of its competitors'.

As a powerful workstation with a small footprint, the W6000 will no doubt find a niche among the space-constrained.

Seems like it might do you for what you want - only downside I see is that it only will hold 2 HD
