Time to pick the project we will try for 1 mil on:

FreeHal is like DepSpid was - "no" CPU usage so it can run in the background. Each task uses about 9MB of memory and you can run up to 8 (? - it keeps changing as Tobias tweaks performance on the server) simultaneous tasks. I have it running on 3 of my PCs and I'm getting ~ 2000 extra credits a day when there's enough work.

I say we should simply try running it in addition to the POTM. What do you say?

Just re-run FreeHal on my main CPU, seems to be working well.

I run it already on my brother's laptop 'cause it's just a notebook @1.6Ghz and I didn't want to use much PC resources. FreeHal had the shortest WUs I found, and since this laptop is not running all the time, I wanted short work to be done on it.

I'll let FreeHal run on my main CPU from now until it breaks again. I remember running it, but once there were problems with the project so I stopped. I know they're looking for some money and they can't guarantee FreeHal will live for a long period of time. We'll see, I guess.

Beside that, my vote went for GenLife.

At the beginning there were definitely some issues, but it's been very stable for the last couple of months. The project currently has some issues with bandwidth and funding, but Tobias has scaled down the work availability to stay within their bandwidth limitations. As for funding...who knows. Just remember to tweak your project settings to allow you to download more than one wu at a time.

Anyone know how FreeHal runs on older machines under linux?

To answer my own question it seems to work very well on older boxes with linux! Brilliant!

It doesnt need much power I guess.

I have to say thanks to user312 for the heads up on FreeHal. Back to running it on my 4 boxes.

No problem, I meant to post about it earlier (back when it started behaving better)but simply forgot. As long as there's work it should add a couple of thousand credits to your daily totals...

I have seen an unprecedented demand for workunits over the last few days and am reaching the limits of diskspace available. There may therefore be times when no new work is available as the work unit cycling job only runs once every hour (at half past the hour). I have also increased the cut off point beyond which a simulation will be saved for deeper analysis to 3.75 trillion instructions (75 runcycles) from 2.5 trillion (50 runcycles)

Hmmm - is it worth our time and computing effort for a project that will have troubles getting enough work out there (that is if I am reading the June 17 notice properly) - it does look like an interesting project tho - think I will hold on to my vote for another week or see and see what unfolds at Genetic Life.

I've had no problems with Genetic so far, in fact I accumulated over 104k pdq.

Just a heads up (couldn't reply on original thread as its locked).

Just received latest electric bill & it's back to normal (albeit, an estimated one - phoned in correct reading). Bill is £312 but with the correction, it should be approx £230 which is normal for me.

Also contacted company & explained that as power comsumption back to normal, how can an extra 3x X2's come close to quadrubling the bill? The've agreed & will arrange for a team to completely check the meter board & wiring. So it's more than possible I should get a very large credit note

Just received some shocking news. Results of engineers test on property. Currently using power to the tune of £200 per month.

So, once I hit the 5 mill mark on 6th July, will be shutting down the majority of my lan, as this cost is unsubstainable at this time.

Will only be running Server, Workstation & Andrea's rig (back to just running 10 cores) ooooooooh, that hurts...........

Looks like itll be Genetic Life by a landslide.

I THINK I'LL KEEP ABC RUNNING ALONGSIDE FOR THIS MONTH

I've got 3x X2's & 3x x4's running & all open for Genetic, but only one getting/has work. All the others when finished wu's on other projects will be switched to Rosetta (kept forgetting this project), as they've been getting "Project has no work available"

Also, they're all running Freehal.
