Doing my stuff from linux on the ps3

Hope a few of you got a ps3 from santa, easy install for boinc now, ps3 has set up a pen drive easy download to help people out!!!!!!!!!!
But if I were you I would install a full version of linux, as it makes the playstation much more usefull (you can use it as a normal desktop computer.
Team Canada is #2 on the board for ps3grid for RAC and hope a couple of you guys can jump on to help out.

Phil

I didn't use the pen drive I went with the full linux install, and I needed a keyboard and a mouse to make it work. (plus a hdmi out to dvi to use a computer monitor) to get the 1080p video out. i believe the pen drive will work with a standard tv. Hope you get your keyboard soon!!!!!!!!!! Phil

I normally crunch for team Ireland so I dont think John our founder would be impressed if I crunched for the Canucks although I suppose I am crunching for Canada and US Navy too at the moment

On my install I type "STARTX" to start the GUI (graphic user interface)

Hope that helps. Phil

Not sure if it matters in this case, but is that "startx" or "STARTX"? Remember Linux is case sensitive...

Hi guys, my brother called to see me earlier as he had a problem that he couldn't resolve. I was gobsmacked as he is the IT specialist, whereas I'm just a systems builder. Problem resolved & he spent several hours here checking out my net.

He found my boinc a/c as I had one of the rigs open on ABC. In the past he was sceptical but as he knows how security conscious I am & also how well I'm doing, I told him about PS3Grid & I directed him to their home page as he has a PS3.

To be honest, I should have kept my mouth shut as he has bitten the boinc bug. He is a senior IT Admin/Analyst & said he will ask his bosses if he could install boinc on the corporate rigs. He then wound me up by saying he would knock me off the ratings as the UK side of his work has 18,000 rigs alone.

I am going to find out if he is successful, & then try to persuade him to join Team Canada! (This is no joke guys, he is a very serious IT technican, & also spends a fair amount of time in Canada on business & holidays)

Also, if he can, I'm going to try & persuade him to call himself Sirius A (((sneakily) so I can bask in family glory)just kidding  )

Bad news on 2 fronts, startx or STARTX didnt work, also my son wants his ps3 back because he is moving out to his own place so my rampant run on the folding@home project will come to a halt too, when it rains it pours :(

@ Sirius B

That is great news, your brother would be a welcome addition even if the company won't let him run BOINC.

Yes it would be brilliant. NO NO NO, he can't call himself Sirius B, that's mine!!!! Sirius A is acceptable

He telephoned this morning to say thanks for solving the problem. It's no big deal as I've had that problem no end of times. He's building a quad & wanted the ram he lent me to build mine back, & as I replaced it with 2x 2gb sticks at the weekend, it was timely. However, he purchased a new drive but XP kept failing installation near the end. Hr tried everything but no joy. So, in case anyone else may come across this problem (especially when doing a re-install), the easiest way to get past the "ntlkrnl" problem, is to set bios to boot from floppy, use a win 98 boot up disk, delete non-dos partition, create a new primary partition which will be fat 32. On rebooting, change back to boot from cd-rom & XP installs without a problem (& on setup, convert drive to ntfs).

I jokingly wound him up regarding boinc & he stated that he wasn't joking as when he got home last night, he looked into PS3Grid & other projects that interest him (Which are similar to mine). He has access to those rigs in the UK & also in Canada, USA, Australia & Europe.

I knew I should have kept my mouth shut  If he succeeds, my stats are going to look like peanuts!!!! If he does, I wonder? Will Team Canada end up the NUMBER ONE team?

I think we could possibly move up to maybe 8th place, which isn't bad for a country with 40 mil people. The thing is with numbers like that, alot of teams would contact him, maybe he doesn't want to crunch for the best team in the world. :#1:

lol Sory i wonted to say SIRUS Minus -B. Like back in school. :)Imagine the BAM account he would have to manege. :)

He would have to pick stable projects with lots off work and leave it there.
