Been messing around with the Roxio Easy Media Creater V10 Suite for the past several hours. From what I can see & understand (so far), is that the DivX converter can only cope with approx 70 min of video & anything larger, it splits into 2 or more files.

As this fact was bugging me, I continued with learning the package & help files. Decided to try out Videowave. This may do the trick - I created a new production & added both files in sequence & saved it as a DivX (better quality file) & it's currently in progress. It has approx another hour to run before the file is finished. Will test it when done.

Note: - Is there a program available that can do this in one hit rather than go through this procedure?

Videowave worked. It spliced in the 2 files seamlessly & also reduced the size from 4.7gb to 1.04gb. This is pretty good, however, I'm not really happy about the output. The film quality itself is pretty good, but on using both Cineplayer & MP11, the film played but had a top & bottom grey panel which I find off putting.

Personally, I like watching a film on computer the same way I watch a film on TV.

Opinions anyone?

Edit: - just finished copying it over to server. A/C open again, however, only the public folder available at the moment.

Film in //public/miscellaneous/DivX/

Would appreciate it if someone can check it out & let me know what they think.

HEY SIRIUS
I CAN'T ACCESS YOUR PUBLIC SECTION SO I CAN'T CHECK THAT ONE FOR YOU.
AS FOR FILE FORMATS, I THINK MP3 IS MORE POPULAR THAN WMA. THE QUALITY SEEMS TO BE ABOUT THE SAME AND SIZES ARE NOT MUCH DIFFERENT.
FOR VIDEOS MPEG4 IS WINNING OUT IN THE RACE AGAINST MPEG AND DIVX IS GOOD BUT A LOT OF PLAYERS NEED CODECS FOR DIVX FIRST AND MPEG4 IS PLAYABLE ON MORE SYSTEMS.
MPEG'S AND MP3'S PLAY ON JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING.

Shutting down network for reconfiguration & upgrading. Hopefully, shouldn't take more than 4 hours.

Edit: - Back up & running. Wish it was always this easy

This is a nice setup, something you have put a lot of work into... I like the front end a lot actually.

Thanks silk_311. The front end was inproved by MS with the PP1 update(powerpack 1 - new name for service pack?). There is only one drawback & that's being able to backup the tombstones. Going to increase storage on workstation & copy all files to that, then upgrade mobo on server so that I can switch on file duplication for all folders, as at the moment, have insufficient space to allow it.

What really amazes me is the fact that WHS only cost £89.00 - & it's saved my bacon again - Been having problems with gpu on desktop, so decided to swap everything around. Worked great on server/worskstation, but desktop wouldn't accept geogforce 8500GT driver, kept giving a BSOD Memory_Management error. Used restore disk & 40 mins later back tp normal. Did try MS's fix but each time refused to install stating that file is earlier than one installed - weird!

Have already seen 1.5tb drives available, but will wait for the 2tb - should be available by the time I've upgraded server.

Evening totally wasted. Anyone experienced a similar problem?

Finally managed to upgrade server from an Asus A8N-SLI SE Socket 939 with an Asus M3N78 Pro socket 940 so that I could add a Phenom II when budget allows.

Unfortunately, after completing the hardware side, installed WHS (no problems) then tried the mobo support CD. It kept exiting stating winnt 5.2 not supported. Checked Asus' download page & no chipset drivers available for either server 2000/2003.

On the A8N mobo, the xp drivers worked with no problem whatsoever, so said stuff it, rebuilt with the A8N mobo as the XPdrivers did the same thing. Well, it needed a good service & a fresh install (remembered this time around to back up all films & music).

Anyone with ideas on how to get it to work with the new mobo?

Stupid me. just received reply from Asus. M3N78 Pro does not support any server software, it's designed for home use as a HTPC board. Never mind, as I want to build a HTPC, I'll keep it & build when needed (currently built as normal desktop running boinc).

Anyone running server on current AM2+ board & if so, what board?

Sorted. ordered an Asus M3A78 Pro board which supports Server 2003 & it meets my requirements. Should be here mid week.

Hi guys, this server "lark" really forces one to remember. Thank god I have the reference books. Finished rebuilding it & putting the data files back. However, experienced a slight hiccup while using SnycToy (Andrea likes adding more music to her rig & I normally use SnycToy to snyc it with the server as well as my own daily rig), it wiped out the music files on the server as well as Andrea's. I was fortunate as I had several recent backups.

At the moment, it's copying over the last 60gb of music, which should be finished by 22:00 GMT. The problem I'm experiencing is accessing the folders remotely - every time I tried I got through to the initial folders, but could not get through to the individual files.

As soon as the copying is done, I will enable the accounts again (see page 1 of thread for access), so would appreciate it, if someone could check the folders out & let me know if they have any problems.

Sidenote: - with the latest addition to the farm, I was thinking of adding another 8 optical drives so that I could upload films/series a lot quicker. Question: - would it work with 9 drives, X4 9950 cpu & 4gb ram? Or would all 9 drives in use slow the rig down?

Check the folder permissions and reset the permissions on all the files to see if it helps as sometimes permissions don't copy over correctly from backups. Just right click the folder and go to "Properties" --> "Security tab" --> (ensure permissions are correct and then continue with...) "Advanced" --> ("Edit" on Win2k8 boxes...) --> Check off "Reset permissions on all child objects..." and hit OK/Apply.

Hope it helps...

Thanks User312, that helped. Another tip into the "little black book". Dropped permissions is a new one on me, so will remember this tip.

 Cracked it  Finally managed to crack the SharePoint access problem. It's amazing what peace & quiet does for one. Rather than just rush in & do what I did last year, sat down, went through the WSS 3.0 manual & took notes.

Applied each step & checked it off before proceeding to next. When finished, tested it - ok!

Would appreciate it if someone (or everyone for that matter) could check it out & leave their comments please.

Seems to work, but you need to change the URL to your external address if you want people to link to it for testing. I managed to scour the threads and find the correct link at homeserver.com or whatever (can't remember now and I've closed the window...).

I wish I was 20 again - finally got Server 2008 installed & configured for a File Server/Web Server & looking good so far. Only problem is no matter what I check, I still can't get net access. Oh well, time to stick head back into the books. (Sorted)

As for the WHS server & Sharepoint, found the problem - It will only work internally on the lan - Needs Sharepoint Server for external access.

That one slipped in quietly. With all the hype & promotion of PP1 last year, just noticed that PP2 was installed during an automatic update. Looks good & it has added some new features.

Also, my ISP has upgraded my services, so would appreciate it if someone can check out the speed.

Question: - have tried to create an "Under construction" page to enter on folders where nothing has been added as yet, but think I didn't do a very good job - Anyone know how to do it better?

:oops2: sorry guys, while checking out the new features of PP2, I noticed the remote access session timeout for the 1st time :oops2: .

it was set to the default 25min, so I've changed this to 2 hours. Again, sorry if you've been logged out automatically. I must admit, I do like the new features, but there is one problem that I find annoying: - It has added Windows Media Center control from the server, BUT, WMC only comes with Home Premium & Ultimate  & all my Vista rigs are Business. Did try MS, but it won't allow Business to download it

My apologies to anyone trying to access server during the last 12 hrs, it's been down along with the rest of my net. Mainly been having problems with the DVD Drives & as a last resort, tried using my test machine's drive & the failed DVD's were copied over no problem. Decided to check each rig out & am ashamed to say that I neglected my own rigs while servicing/upgrading customers.

I think one or two DVD drives are failing but the rest were playing up due to overheating. Have serviced most but have workstation & server to do which should be done by this evening (I hope).
