I joined Radioactive@home several months ago and purchased one of their radiation detectors. It's a project similar to QuakeCatcher in that your computer simply collects data from the detector and uploads it to the server periodically. It's an NCI (non-computation intensive) project so you don't earn a lot of credit.

Recently one of the R@h volunteers received a radiation detector from the project and it didn't work properly. I acquired the detector and fixed it and am offering it to members of team Canada. It was a very minor repair, I tested it thoroughly and it works. The only extras you will need are a USB cable to connect it to the computer and a suitable container for the device. Just pay me for the cost of shipping it to you and its yours. I accept PayPal, cash or Canada Post Money Order, no personal cheques. I expect shipping will be about $10 CDN. My first detector cost me $55 so 10 is a good deal.

The detector I am offering is the first model they built and it's not what you would call "polished". It's bare bones. It's designed and built well but they didn't put it in a nice box or attach the Geiger-Muller tube to the circuit board. You get the bare circuit board and you connect the Geiger-Muller tube with two alligator clips on leads. Don't solder the leads to the tube because the heat will damage it. There is 400 V DC exposed on the circuit board and at the ends of the leads so if you touch it in the wrong place when it's powered up it could kill you. When I heard about that I knew I had to have one and now I am offering you a chance to have one of your very own at an unbeaatable price. As deadly as a rattlesnake and you don't have to feed it.

R@h volunteers have been putting these detectors in various containers. To get an idea of what you can do to contain the thing see the pictures in this thread at R@h forums. My container is inspired by our very own Red Green. I wrapped it up in duct tape and cut out a hole for the LCD. That's all ya need.

First come first served. Duct tape and USB cable not included.

VERY COOL!

So it's measuring gamma radiation AND it could kill me?

tempting

It detects beta as well as gamma radiation and with a different Geiger-Muller tube it will detect alpha, beta and gamma radiation.

Actually there is some debate over whether the 400 volts can kill you. Some have said the circuit can't supply enough amperage to kill you but if you're wearing a pacemaker or have a weak heart it might. On the R@h home page there is a warning and an explanation of exactly where you should not touch the circuitboard. Once it's in an insulating container it's pretty safe.

The objective of the project is to built a worldwide radiation watch network. After your detector returns its first WU you can specify your detector's location on this map of the world. Each green dot is a detector and you can see mine in southern Alberta very close to the Canada-US border. All the data the project collects is available online for free, it's a non-profit project started by some guys in the BOINC@Poland team.

I don't have the detector I am offering connected and running at the moment but I can, no problem, and if you tell me where you want me to locate the detector (in which town/city) I can do so to prove I have the detector and that it works.
